Most hot tubs require 15 amps as they don't draw more than 15 amps to run it. Some can draw 16 to 20 amps just during its start up but that is usually not long enough to oxidize the wires and destroy the circuit board.
Note: There are some tubs that rate their tubs for 20 amps and tell people to get a 20 amp outlet just to make them think they are getting a more powerful tub but in reality the tub is "rated" for 20 amps but when we took our amp meter from Radio Shack (a Kill-O-Watt meter) the tub only pulled in 20 amps when you first turned it on and then went back under 15 when it was on. Such BS.
Remember, just because the tub is rated for 20 amps doesn't mean it will put out 20 amps. It's probably gonna handle much less. I always ask what the gauge of the wire used in the hot tub. Then I ask what the constant power of the hot tub. If anyone says its a 20 amp tub they are probably referring to the peak power, not what the tub will run at while its on, just the second it starts up which to me is not cool.
If someone is living in a very cold climate in the winter, they are probably going to want the maximum amperage they can get.
They make hot tubs over 20 amps too. Why not get a 30 amp tub? You will have to plug it in a 30 amp outlet also.
